Mystery Blogger Award

I was tagged by Sarah for this fun award! I’ve been saving it for a while in order to post something different in the middle of my long buddy read of The Stand, which has been taking up a lot of my reading and reviewing time. If you’re not already following Sarah you should definitely check out her blog, she’s a delightful human and her reviews are always so thoughtful and thorough!

Questions to Answer

  1. What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently? – Ooh, this is tough, as I haven’t watched any movies in a couple of months! I think the last I saw was Bohemian Rhapsody, right in the midst of my Daisy Jones craze this spring, which made it a perfect fit!
  2. How often do you make music playlists? – Only once or twice a year. I tend to spend a lot of time carefully curating them to my current taste and adding a ton of songs so that I can use them for ages, until I feel like my life has changed enough that I need an all-new soundtrack.
  3. What’s the last book you were gifted? – One of my friends gave me One Day in December by Josie Silver as a belated Christmas gift. I haven’t yet read it because I want to pick it up in December- we exchanged gifts on New Year’s Eve so there wasn’t time last year!
  4. What are you looking forward to right now? – I’m really looking forward to the announcement of the Man Booker longlist! I had so much fun following along with the Women’s Prize this spring (even though it didn’t turn out as I’d hoped it would) that I’m excited to start again with another prize! Even though I’m not fully committing to reading the entire longlist before seeing it, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to do so.
  5. [weird question] If you could switch places with one actor in any scene in any movie/TV show, which would it be? –  [appropriately weird answer, lol] I would want Leonardo DiCaprio’s role on Titanic when the ship first sets out. Waving to the crowds and all. Titanic sank on my birthday (historically; I wasn’t born in 1912) and I’ve always been fascinated with the story of its sinking. So many things had to happen in the exact way that they did for that disaster to have been as bad as it was, it’s eerie. But when the ship sets sail on its first and only voyage, what a time to be alive, right? I would’ve loved to be on Titanic. Except not really, because of the 1,500+ people dying and all. So movie Titanic would be the best option, really. Rose just doesn’t have the right level of enthusiasm, but for Jack it’s the best time of his life. That’s the closest I’d like to get to experiencing Titanic.

About me

  1. I collect postcards. I haven’t been many places, but I ask my family and friends to pick them up for me as well so I’ve gathered probably upwards of 200? Looking at places I want to go is very conducive to goal setting for me.
  2. I have never been able to fall asleep while reading. I get tired, but I have to put the book down and make the choice to close my eyes before I’m able to sleep.
  3. My favorite food is probably popcorn. I like a lot of other things, but popcorn is the only food I don’t think I have ever or would ever turn down, if offered.

Fave posts

  • I had a lot of fun assembling my Women’s Prize longlist wrap-up, especially since this was the first year I managed to keep up with the prize schedule. I also loved chatting with everyone else who read longlisted titles this year!
  • Almost-favorites is a list I started last Thanksgiving, that I intend to continue on a yearly basis. This list highlights top contenders that don’t quite make it to my favorite reads of the year list, though I still consider them valuable moments in my reading life.
  • Top of the TBR is a new series I’ve started that I really love posting every week. It’s easy to keep up with, but it also builds a lot of bookish excitement for me. I’ve linked the most recent addition.

Thanks again to Sarah for the tag!

I really enjoy the tags/awards that look different every time you see them; there’s so much room for creativity here. If you haven’t tried it yet, now is your chance! And even if you have, this is a great post to repeat with different questions and answers. Happy blogging, all!

  1. Thanks for the tag, you’re so kind!
I LOVE your answer about the Titanic, that is so interesting and well put. I totally understood the sentiment from how you explained it, I never would’ve considered it that way and now I see it.

    1. I hope you’ll have fun with the tag, if you decide to try it! 🙂
And thank you, I’m glad my Titanic answer made sense! There’s such a strange juxtaposition that comes from recognizing tragedy on what is otherwise a day of celebration for me, and I do have a hard time reconciling my feelings about it, much less explaining them to other people.

  2. Thank you for the nomination! You have some great answerers too. I am yet to see “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but I have heard only great things about it, so it is next on my to-watch list. I have also just read the synopsis to “One Day in December” and it sounds romantic and sweet, even though I did vow to myself to move away from books with love triangles. There are way too many of them out there 🙂

    1. I hope you enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody! It is such an excellent film.
I also tend to gravitate away from love triangles, but One Day in December sounds so promising! It looks to me like it will examine the challenges of a love triangle in a more realistic way, rather than just using the trope for angst, so I’m hoping it lives up to expectations! I hope you enjoy it as well.
And have fun with the tag, if you decide to try it! 🙂

  3. It still blows my mind that people make music play lists, because digital music is still so new to me. I’m from the time when you had to lay down $20 bucks for a CD when the going pay rate was $5.25. That’s like more than half a day after taxes to buy a CD that may have 1-2 good songs on it. Thus, I’m very much a “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” music person. If it’s on, it’s on. If I hate it, I turn it off. I don’t really have playlists. We used to record music off of CDs on to cassettes to make mixed tapes, but you didn’t really fast forward a cassette. Well, not unless you were very brave. One minute you had Black Crows and the next you had The Spin Doctors. It was very “whatever.” Now people have things like driving playlists and workout play lists and even swerve playlists. Whoa.

    1. That’s hilarious! Until I was 15 my parents still primarily used a car with a cassette player in it, so I do remember listening to those homemade mixed tapes. My playlists are definitely not that specific to different activities; I make one long all-purpose list that’s usually genre-focused, and then I use it for everything I want music for. My current list is mostly classic rock, and I mainly just put it on and leave it on, the exception being when a slow song comes on while I’m running- I’m going to skip that because exercise is hard enough!

      1. How far do you run? Do you have a special place you like to run? I always picture people running on trails of wood chips in the forest, but I’ve also seen too many Law & Order episodes that start with a runner dead in the woods. 🏃‍♀️☠️🚓

      2. Haha, I live in rural Iowa so no forest trails! I live on a street with corn fields for miles on both sides, and it doesn’t get much traffic so I just run right on the street, 1-4 miles depending on the day. There are a few gravel side streets I can use for route variety, but there’s really nothing much to see beyond corn and soybeans any way I go. I do like to run in the evenings, so I get some nice sunsets sometimes. The sky is huge in Iowa, since it’s so flat. Also the neighbors are very nosy people (not rude, there’s just so little going on here that everyone keeps track of everyone else), so if anyone tries to murder me I’m sure there will be witnesses lol

      3. Ha that’s true, the best murder mysteries are always the ones where someone knows more than they’re saying, not the ones where no one knows anything!

  4. Omg your answer of wanting to switch places with Jack from Titanic cracked me up, but I totally get it! I’ve always been morbidly fascinated by the Titanic as well, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently because one of our children’s books is about the Titanic and I’ve had to proofread it twice in the past few weeks. I think the fact of how glorious it must have been for everyone when it set sail is partially what makes it such a tragic story.

    1. Ooh, that sounds interesting- I would’ve loved to find something accessible to read about Titanic as a kid. My HS library had A Night to Remember, but nothing for kids. I’m glad such things exist. It bothers me to encounter people who think Titanic was just a popular movie.
But yes, it must have started out so glamorous! That’s what gets to me, for sure. I knew it would be a strange answer, but I’m glad it doesn’t seem to be too far off the wall!

  5. Thank you for the tag! And strangely enough, I’ve never been able to fall asleep while reading. Actually, I’ve never been able to fall asleep doing anything other than ‘trying to sleep’ if that makes sense.

Side note-I’m going to read Daisy Jones next week and I’m SO excited for it

    1. Of course! 🙂
I’m exactly the same, I don’t fall asleep to movies or music or anything- sleep for me is a specific activity, and I can’t make it work unless I put aside other activities.

You’ve got a treat ahead of you with Daisy Jones, it’s such a fun read! I hope you enjoy it!

  6. Haha, I love that you specified that you were not born in the early 1900s.
I also cannot fall asleep while reading! I don’t know how other people do it, because it just doesn’t happen to me.

    1. You would be surprised how often when I mention that my birthday is on the date Titanic sank that people think I mean it happened in the same year! It’s easier just to clarify upfront than to pretend that makes any sense…

On the one hand, I’m a bit jealous of those easy sleepers who don’t get too invested in stories to drift off, but on the other hand, it’s nice to never miss a plot point!
